Using Additional Moderator to Control the Footprint of a COSMOS Rover for Soil Moisture Measurement

چکیده
Cosmic-Ray Neutron Probes (CRNP) have found application in soil moisture (SM) estimation due to their conveniently large (>100 m) footprints. Here, we explore the possibility of using high-density polyethylene (HDPE) moderator limit field view, and hence, footprint a SM sensor formed 12 CRNP mounted on mobile robotic platform (Thorvald) for better in-field localization variation. Ultra Rapid Adaptable Neutron-Only Simulation neutron scattering simulations are used show that 5 cm additional HDPE (used shield upper surface sides detector) is sufficient (a) reduce detector considerably, (b) approximately double percentage neutrons detected from within m detector, (c) does not affect shape curve convert counts into SM. rover measurements transect crossing between grass concrete additionally suggest (d) changes can be sensed over length scales tens meters or less (roughly an order magnitude smaller than commonly distances), (e) count rate (and hence increase noise) as much might expected given extent moderator. Calibration and Validation of the COSMOS Rover for Surface Soil Moisture Measurement
The COsmic-ray Soil Moisture Observing System (COSMOS) rover may be useful for validating satellite-based estimates of near-surface soil moisture, but the accuracy with which the rover can measure 0to 5-cm soil moisture has not been previously determined. Our objectives were to calibrate and validate a COSMOS rover for mapping 0to 5-cm soil moisture at spatial scales suitable for evaluating sat...
متن کاملThe COsmic-ray Soil Moisture Observing System (COSMOS): a non-invasive, intermediate scale soil moisture measurement network
Soil moisture at a horizontal scale of around 700 m and depths of 15 to 70 cm can be inferred from measurements of cosmic-ray neutrons that are generated within soil, moderated mainly by the hydrogen atoms in water, and emitted back to the atmosphere. The intensity of the resulting field of neutrons above the ground is sensitive to water content changes, largely insensitive to soil chemistry an...

abstract nowadays, the science of decision making has been paid to more attention due to the complexity of the problems of suppliers selection. as known, one of the efficient tools in economic and human resources development is the extension of communication networks in developing countries. so, the proper selection of suppliers of tc equipments is of concern very much. in this study, a ...
15 صفحه اولCOSMOS: the COsmic-ray Soil Moisture Observing System
The newly-developed cosmic-ray method for measuring area-average soil moisture at the hectometer horizontal scale is being implemented in the COsmic-ray Soil Moisture Observing System (or the COSMOS). The stationary cosmic-ray soil moisture probe measures the neutrons that are generated by cosmic rays within air and soil and other materials, moderated by mainly hydrogen atoms located primarily ...
متن کاملQuantifying mesoscale soil moisture with the cosmic-ray rover
Soil moisture governs the surface fluxes of mass and energy and is a major influence on floods and drought. Existing techniques measure soil moisture either at a point or over a large area many kilometers across. To bridge these two scales we used the cosmic-ray rover, an instrument similar to the recently developed COSMOS probe, but bigger and mobile. This paper explores the challenges and opp...
